HOMEWARES

Homewares have evolved enormously and yet also, hardly at all. Some vintage and antique pieces are every bit as usable and ingenious as they ever were. Others are often given a new lease of life as decoration or repurposed for a new generation.

JAMES DIXON & SON SILVER PLATED SUGAR BOWL AND CREAMER C1920

James Dixon & Son were one of the foremost silversmiths and manufacturer of silver plate, britannia metal and Sheffield plate of the 19th century - founded in 1806 and not dissolved until 1980! This is a lovely example of a part tea-set, the sugar bowl and creamer with full manufacturers and model marks on the base. Some wear marks to the bowl but otherwise in overall clean excellent condition. Judged to be c1920 from the marks, it's on the cusp between Edwardian elegance and the dawn of the Deco movement. Its classic lines means it could easily dress out a Regency or Early Victorian tea table. Both pieces 4" high to the tops of the handles. £38

SELECTION OF STONEWARE AND SALT-GLAZED POTS

These pots make wonderful dressing for the rustic kitchen or clustered in a fireplace. For set dressing they instantly evoke a period look, anything from medieval, through Tudor, to a ramshackle artist studio of the 1960s. Ranging from £4-£9 each depending on size and condition.

GORGEOUS LATE VICTORIAN HAND PAINTED SILK LARGE PHOTOGRAPH FRAME

Old photographs are wonderful. An accurate portrait of a real human from another time, who’d otherwise be lost to the past. This wonderful late Victorian/Edwardian gentleman doesn’t look out of place among the blossoms. This lovely large silk covered frame is hand painted with spring blossoms and protected under glass. The silk is fraying with age in places but the back is in good original condition with an old cord handing (probably not original). I wonder what he really thought of it? (47cm x 45cm) £45

ORNATE GILT METAL SEWING NOTION THIMBLE AND NEEDLE CASE

Possibly one of the prettiest one I've seen! Often found in brass but this one is gilt and ornately chased with floral scroll. Containing a little wooden thread winder which has a lid itself for you to pop your needles inside. Would likely have also contained a thimble which is not present. Case has a couple of dents but otherwise in good order. £22

CHESTERMAN OF SHEFFIELD EDWARDIAN BRASS RETRACTING LINEN TAPE MEASURE

Would you believe the retractable tape measure was invented in 1829 by this very man, James Chesterman of Sheffield. The Chesterman name became synonymous with top quality tools and measures and this is no exception. A brass retracting linen tailor’s tape measure in full working order. A safety pin has been added to stop the end getting lost as it may be missing a piece. The press button retractor works perfectly! £16
