Costume accessories are some of the most interesting and charming antiques to buy and collect. These were some of the most personal items used, handled and loved by their original owners. From fans to jewellery, to hats to clothing itself. Each item has an intimate story.  Who used this piece? And why?

 

STUNNING 1920S BEADED BAG WITH TORTOISESHELL FRAME AND CLASP 

This is a gobsmackingly gorgeous 1920s beaded bag with original tortoiseshell frame and loops with a beaded handle, original interior. Oh the parties this could have been too! In superb condition, a few very small areas of loss and the interior has the expected wear but is not shredded. Well made and with a good weight. 18cm wide at the widest point, 35cm from top of handle to the bottom. £65

 

BEAUTIFUL EDWARDIAN SILK GAUZE FAN WITH SILVER INLAID BONE STICKS AND SEQUIN EMBROIDERY 

A lovely large and elegant carved bone fan with inlaid silver. The cream silk gauze fan has a subtle sequin embroidered design, a couple of very small areas of wear to the delicate gauze. One of the guard sticks has had an old repair but in good working order.  14" (36cm) long, 26" (66 cm) wide when open. £65

 

STUNNING 19TH CENTURY LACE HAND FAN WITH ORNATE CARVED MOTHER OF PEARL STICKS

This absolutely stunning fan has ornate carved and gilt detailed mother of pearl sticks and an ornate cream lace mount. It has clearly graced many a sumptuous ballroom and fluttered with abandon as it has had some repairs to the guard sticks. It is worth seeking professional restoration to return this remarkable piece to its full glory but otherwise careful use or display should ensure this piece is admired for many years to come. £95

 

FINE SILK GAUZE FAN WITH LACE EDGE AND SEQUIN DETAIL 

This is a beautiful ivory coloured fine silk gauze fan with sequin details and a lace trim on painted wooden sticks. The gauze is starting to fray a little as expected from age and use, likely mid-late Victorian. Sticks are all intact. £45

 

PRETTY EDWARDIAN LACE FAN WITH MOTHER OF PEARL STICKS

This pretty as a picture fan is in overall good condition apart from one missing stick which has broken off at the base. The lace is in good order and it still folds and works beautifully. Gorgeous. £35

 

1920S PAINTED PAPER FAN WITH DECORATED WOODEN STICKS

This is a beautiful large hand painted paper fan circa 1920s decorated with floral and oriental motifs, a lovely example of early Art Deco. Some small tears to the paper but otherwise in great condition. £25

 

FINE EDWARDIAN BONE FAN WITH DELICATE SILK GAUZE AND PAINTED SCENES

A large beautiful Edwardian fan with bone sticks with gilded decoration. Mounted with delicate silk gauze which is starting to fray at either end and one section has been glued to the guard stick in the past. The decoration is handpainted with gilding and 18th century scenes accented with sequins. Delicate, but in overall good condition. £75

This is a charming little cream and beaded 1920s evening purse in great overall condition. A slight loosening of the beads and a tiny rust patch where the fastener has stained the internal fabric is the only damage. £22

 

TINY EDWARDIAN CHAIN MAIL PURSE 

A popular accessory during the late Victorian and Edwardian period, this is a modest little example with a delicately chased brass metal frame. You won’t fit much in here but it might hold a shilling or two for the hansom cab. £12

This is a fab little 1940s handbag with a stylish clasp. Interior is in very good condition, zip runs smoothly, but the outside has some scuffs commensurate with age, and the handle has a split and repair. A great authentic piece of period styling. 9" wide. £25.

 

VINTAGE BROWN LEATHER JONELLE HANDBAG

This is a very smart brown leather handbag from Jonelle which would grace any period look from the 1940s onwards and in superb overall condition. A little light wear to the corners on the exterior, but otherwise the inside is immaculate. 12" wide. £25

 

PAIR OF CELLULOID ART DECO COMBS WITH DIAMANTÉ 

A perfect pair of Art Deco hair combs made from celluloid to simulate tortoiseshell. These have immaculate diamanté accents, with all stones intact.  £25

 

19TH CENTURY SILVER PLATED BEAUCOURT POCKET WATCH

This is such a nice clean pocket watch but sadly missing it’s glass. Key wind mechanism in the back so it might be made to work again and has a tiny hairline crack on the face. It’s surprising more pocket watches don’t get ruined as they were so much a part of every day life. Perhaps a restorer could bring this back to glory! £30

 

INGERSOLL BRASS POCKET WATCH - WORKING ORDER

Charming little brass pocket watch by Ingersoll London Ltd, mid 20th century and in full working order. It is missing its top loop to attach a chain but this could easily be replaced. Slight scratches to the glass cover but both front and back pop off easily for cleaning and servicing. £25

 

CHARMING SILVER VICTORIAN LADY’S POCKET WATCH

This smaller sized pocket watch would have been ideal for the smart Victorian woman. A gorgeously decorated case with delicate floral painted detail on the face and hallmarked for Birmingham 1885. Not currently working and missing one hand, it could easily be brought back to its former glory! £35

 

ART DECO SILVER PLATED POCKET WATCH

If you didn’t know it from the front, then the glorious sunburst design on the back casing just shouts 1920s! This lovely watch was once owned by someone who scratched their initials into the empty cartouche at the back but this could be altered or replaced with a silver panel to avoid scratch the playing. Not working but a delightful costume prop or piece of dressing! £30

 

BEAUTIFUL DENNISON GOLD PLATED EDWARDIAN POCKET WATCH

This must have a lovely tale to tell its inscription shows! Given as a gift from his fellow workers at Tivydale Colliery in 1919, Mr John Davies must have been admired and respected to receive such a top quality gift! A little damage to the catch and it’s not working but with restoration it could be a wonderful piece. Or a perfect costume accessory either way! £55

This is a lovely little purse in brown leather with a metal clasp and internal change section with press button release. A lovely little piece of engineering for an item very much a part of everyday life. In wonderful condition considering how much these were used! £18

 

EARLY 20TH CENTURY MEN'S LEATHER CARD CASE / POCKET BOOK

The essential gent's accessory from the late 19th - early 20th century. These leather card cases can store your calling cards, money and love letters with ease. The ones with initials are particularly curious - I'd love to know what "H.G.G." kept in his! £20 each

To be honest - you don't store much in here. A remnant of an age where it was useful to have a sovereign on you in case of emergencies, this charming embossed leather purse has some wear as you'd expect but a clean interior and a tight clasp. £12

 
 

BOWLER HAT BY LINCOLN BENNETT & CO

For the smart gentleman about town! A neat little bowler hat from Lincoln Bennett & Co of London. Some nibbles to the rim as you’d expect from being handled and worn but the interior is in superb condition. Internal circumference 22” (56cm) £30

 

SMART VINTAGE GREY TOP HAT IN EXCELLENT CONDITION BY SAMUEL MORTLOCK & SON, LONDON

Samuel Mortlock & Son of Gracechurch Street were top quality gentleman's hatters from 1869 and this later grey top hat is in superb condition. The owner put his initials inside in small metal discs "R.F.S" - what was his name? Whoever he was he clearly took care of his possessions (or had a superb valet) as apart from some light age marks to the silk its in superb condition and completely wearable. £35
